Chocolate Babka Buns: Sweetness Worth Sharing

Babka has always been a bread with a story — one that starts in the warm, flour-dusted kitchens of Eastern Europe in the 19th century. The name itself comes from baba, the Slavic word for grandmother. It’s said that early babkas were shaped to resemble a grandmother’s skirt, but it’s the heart behind the bread that matters more. Grandmothers have a way of making sure no one leaves hungry. They stretch what’s on hand, turn leftovers into something beautiful, and never need an excuse to put another plate on the table.

Some breads are humble—made to quietly carry butter, cradle an egg, or sop up the last bit of soup. Babka is not one of those breads. Babka is a show-off in the best possible way. It’s bread that dances, swirls, and flirts. Chocolate babka, especially, is indulgence braided into every strand—rich dough rolled thin, spread edge to edge with cocoa and sugar, then twisted into ribbons that bake into a mosaic of tender crumb and glossy chocolate. It’s the kind of bread that stops you mid-sentence, because there’s just no way to talk politely with that much bliss in your mouth.

Starting Monday, we’re baking that indulgence into individual Chocolate Babka Buns and sending 75% of each sale to World Central Kitchen. Founded by Chef José Andrés, WCK responds to crises—natural disasters, war, and humanitarian emergencies—by serving fresh, nourishing meals where they’re needed most. From hurricane-hit coastlines to communities uprooted by conflict, their work is immediate, compassionate, and driven by the same belief we hold dear: that food is more than fuel.  It’s comfort, dignity, care, and a basic human right, all rolled into one.

So yes, it’s bread. But it’s also an invitation: to treat yourself, to help someone else, and to remember that sometimes the sweetest things are the ones we share.
