Water has always meant more than just water.
Long before science lessons and field trips and hydration reminders on our phones, water was a symbol — of renewal, of movement, of change. Ancient traditions built rituals around it. Philosophers reminded us that no one steps in the same river twice. And Carly Simon gave us a full-throated anthem with lyrics that still feel timely: “Let the river run / Let all the dreamers wake the nation.”
And yet most days, it’s the simplest thing in the world. You turn a tap. You take a sip. You keep moving.
That’s exactly why WaterFest matters.

WaterFest is a hands-on educational experience for 2nd through 5th graders across Knox County, Maryville, Oak Ridge, and Lenoir City. At Ijams Nature Center, students explore the water cycle, water quality, and the living ecosystems that depend on clean water — all through interactive science activities and performances designed to spark curiosity and stewardship.
This year’s theme is The Ripple Effect. It’s a good reminder that what happens upstream never stays upstream. Water connects everything — landscapes, communities, and the literal functioning of our bodies. It sustains us, shapes us, and sometimes humbles us when we forget how essential it really is.
That’s why we’re proud to help kick off WaterFest 2026 early here at The Tomato Head.
Working alongside the Water Quality Forum, we’re raising funds to help send local students to the event. Proceeds from drink sales and special promotions will go directly toward making sure young people in our region can attend this free, science-based program and learn how to care for one of our most precious shared resources.
Because understanding water is really about understanding connection — to place, to each other, and to the future we’re all helping shape.
Let the river run.
